Riding for the Disabled
RDA is a pioneer in the therapeutic use of horses, a leader in disability sport, and the only major UK charity to focus specifically on the health and wellbeing benefits of bringing people and horses together.
Over 400 RDA groups are located in urban and rural settings throughout the UK. Together they support disabled children and adults to take part in activities such as horse-care, riding, carriage-driving and vaulting, or just to spend quiet time with a pony. This is all made possible by our 13,000 volunteers, 1,500 qualified coaches, and 2,700 horses, bringing the joy of horses to over 25,000 people.
RDA demonstrates that horses have a unique role to play in addressing today’s societal challenges. Our work supports people facing some of the most significant challenges in society, providing opportunities to stay active, to improve physical mobility and strength, to boost mental wellbeing, to build confidence and to learn new skills.
With 24% of the UK population classified as disabled, we want as many people as possible to have the chance to connect with horses and enjoy these benefits.
Donations are essential for us to continue our life changing work enriching lives through horses and your vote for RDA to become Harry Hall’s next charity partner for 2025, will help us to secure vital funding.
HorseBack UK
HorseBack UK is a charity dedicated to inspiring positive change and promoting recovery through horsemanship and outdoor activities. The charity focuses on enhancing confidence, self-esteem, and resilience in individuals, particularly veterans, offering nationally accredited programs designed to provide coping strategies and life skills.
Ride High
Ride High is a charity using horses to transform the lives of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.
We effect lasting change in children’s attitude, self-confidence and life prospects so they become happy young people who are positively engaged in the outside world. Children aged 8-18 years are referred to Ride High on an individual basis by professionals so we can prioritise those most in need of help. Each of them faces challenges that make everyday life a struggle. Many have suffered neglect, abuse and/or trauma which has led to mental health challenges including anxiety, depression and self-harm.
Up to 120 children attend Ride High at our home at the Ride High Equestrian Centre in Milton Keynes every week for 12-36 weeks. They follow a programme of structured learning which includes riding and caring for the horses and associated educational and creative projects in our clubroom and garden. Ride High’s unique programme empowers our members to develop new skills, to increase their confidence and self-esteem and to build greater resilience to change negative mindsets and challenging behaviours.
The Emile Faurie Foundation
The Emile Faurie Foundation focuses on making equestrian sports and activities accessible to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate.
Established in 2007, the Foundation provides children with the opportunity to experience the joy of horse riding and gain a sense of achievement through mastering new skills in equestrian activitie. Now in its 18th year the Foundation works closely in collaboration with State schools and Youth projects throughout the UK funding disadvantaged children living in inner cities and deprived areas to ride and have contact with horses. The Foundation links schools with riding school’s in their area where the children have weekly lessons throughout the school term. This opportunity to have contact with horses is found to have a profound effect on the children’s mental well-being, boosting their self-esteem, confidence and developing their learning skills.
Some of the children from our projects have gone onto follow career paths and gain qualifications in the Equine Industry. We a self-funding Charity and are grateful for any recognition and support.
The Ebony Horse Club
Ebony Horse Club was established in 1996 to support young people in Brixton to develop key life skills and improve both physical and holistic health through access to horses. We provide young people with the opportunity to experience the benefits of horse riding on their doorstep, making equestrianism accessible in the fullest sense of the term.
We believe that young people should not be restricted by their environment to achieve their full potential. We place a keen focus on breaking cycles of poverty and ensuring our young people can move into meaningful employment, Further Education or apprenticeships by the time they graduate from our services. All whilst having a lot of fun!
