What is veteran horse insurance?

Veteran horse insurance is a type of horse insurance targeted towards or appropriate for veteran or mature horses ie. horses over the age of 15. Insuring an older horse is generally associated with age limits, exclusions and higher premiums due to the higher risk of illness or injuries that may occur.

Veteran horse insurance is generally used as a way of maintaining cover for mature horses, or those with prior conditions, that become too expensive for owners to insure on a comprehensive policy. Owners tend to accept it won’t cover all vets bills anymore but they have peace of mind in case of a big public liability claim or unexpected yard accident.

Do you need to insure your older horse?

There is no legal requirement to insure your horse no matter what age they are. However, it’s often advisable to consider insuring your horse, especially an older one. Even though it may seem less necessary to insure a veteran horse compared to a younger one, it’s important to consider the implication of not insuring it.

Veterinary fee insurance doesn’t always have to cover chronic conditions or illnesses but focus on accidental injuries instead which can be less costly to insure.

Even older horses can cause damage or injury to properties or people which could be covered with public liability insurance no matter the age of your horse.  In the event of your horse’s passing away due to an AEIO, mortality or disposal coverage can provide financial help too.

Understand your veteran horse insurance cover options

At Harry Hall cover for veteran horses comes from a combination of Gold or Platinum membership with accidental external injury vet fees insurance policy.

  • Gold and Platinum One Club membership provides £10m Public Liability and £10k Personal Accident insurance with no age limits to consider for your horse. Memberships start from £4.92 per month.
  • Our Vet Fees Insurance offers a shared claim limit for accidental external visible injuries and is available for any horse over 30 days old. Vet fees cover can be added to your membership from £8.40 per month.

Got more than one horse? As standard you’ll be covering a max of 2 horses with our memberships but a Platinum membership covers as many as 10 horses.

Colic surgery excludes horses over 15 years old as a result of their increased risk. Policies that cover illnesses like ulcers, kissing spine and laminitis frequently exclude older horses or cost significantly more – we focus on making horse ownership more affordable instead.

But the public liability included in the Gold and Platinum membership and the accidental, external injury vet fees policy have no upper age limit as standard. The price you see is the price you pay no matter the age of your horse.

Rachel says: “Hastings, my 27-year field companion, has never been ridden due to a spinal injury at birth.

A few weeks ago, he crashed through a fence and landed in nettles, leaving him badly cut and in shock from the stings. I feared the worst, but the vet arrived quickly, treated him with sedation, stitches, and antibiotics.

Thankfully, he recovered well. When the £852.61 vet bill arrived, I was so relieved it was covered by my Harry Hall vet fees insurance.”

Frequently asked questions

What’s classed as a veteran horse?

Horses are considered veterans from around 15 years and older.

Are there age restrictions for veteran horse insurance?

Whilst policies frequently do, the combination of public liability included in our Gold and Platinum memberships and vet fees insurance have no age limits. That means older horses with existing ailments can still be covered. The only exception is our colic surgery which excludes horses over 15 years old as a result of their increased risk.

Do I get a discount if I insure multiple horses?

Horse insurance arranged by Harry Hall is multi-horse as standard covering up to 2 horses. If you require insurance for more than two horses, take a look at the Platinum memberships which allow you to insure a maximum of 10 horses.

Can I insure a veteran horse on the same policy as a younger one?

Yes, you can insure a veteran horse and a younger horse on the same policy. Since the horse insurance covers up to 2 horses as standard, you can include both when you take out your policy. Adding and changing horses mid term to your shared claim limit is also possible too (see our terms for information on any charges).

Can I increase or decrease my coverage if my horse’s needs change?

Yes, it’s easy to update your coverage to fit your horse’s needs should they change. You can simply update or change horses in in our online portal or give our friendly customer service team a call before your renewal to discuss an upgrade or downgrade to your policy cover at the renewal on 01274 711011.

Will my veteran horse need a vetting to get horse insurance?

Whilst vettings are common for many horse insurance policies; at Harry Hall, horses can get insured without the need for a costly vet visit.
