Horse Census

Revealing Equestrian Trends in the UK

At Harry Hall, we recognise the need for comprehensive data to truly understand the challenges facing our equestrian community. The Harry Hall 2024/25 Horse Census represents our commitment to going beyond surface – level insights, engaging directly with horse owners and riders across the UK.

We surveyed 3,343 equestrians in the UK

Using a comprehensive online questionnaire, we gathered insights from 3,343 horse owners and riders across the nation.

The digital format allowed us to reach equestrians from diverse backgrounds and regions, ensuring a robust sample size that provides credible insights into the current state of horse ownership in Britain.

Our survey was designed to be both accessible and thorough, enabling participants to share detailed information about their equestrian lifestyle, financial commitments, and the personal impacts of rising costs. Each respondents was asked a series of carefully crafted questions covering key aspects of horse ownership and care, from essential expenses to lifestyle adjustments.

Making horse
ownership more
affordable & accessible

By launching our annual census, we’re not just gathering statistics – we’re documenting the real experiences and sacrifices made by equestrians in challenging economic times.

The results serve as a foundation for creating more affordable, accessible products and services that directly address the needs revealed through our research. This aligns with Harry Hall’s broader mission to make horse ownership more affordable and accessible for everybody.

Cost of living affects horse ownership

Our Horse Census reveals the stark reality of how the cost of living crisis is forcing equestrians to make significant personal sacrifices to maintain their horses’ well-being.

The findings paint a concerning picture, with horse owners increasingly having to choose between their own basic needs and their commitment to their equine companions.

We asked equestrians Have you had to make cutbacks in other areas of your life in order to keep your horse? 64% said yes.

One in three equestrians (36%) have been forced to reduce their own food budget to prioritise their horse's care.
icon_advantage_block
More than a quarter (28%) have had to give up maintaining and running their car, potentially impacting their ability to work and travel.
icon_advantage_block
Almost a quarter (24%) are foregoing dental treatment, highlighting how horse owners are potentially compromising their own health to ensure their horses receive the care they need.

These statistics aren’t just numbers – they represent real people in our equestrian community making difficult choices every day. With the average cost of horse ownership reported at £6,000 per year * and continuing to rise, these compromises reflect the deep dedication of horse owners who are determined to maintain the highest standards of care for their horses, even in the face of significant personal sacrifice.

Eight in ten British equestrians admit caring for equines ‘is getting harder’

Despite mounting financial pressures, the UK’s love affair with equestrianism continues to thrive, with over 3.2 million Brits taking to the saddle last year. However, our Horse Census reveals a concerning trend: 8 in 10 British equestrians admit that owning and caring for horses is becoming increasingly challenging in today’s economic climate.

These findings demonstrate the critical importance of making equestrianism more affordable and accessible for the future, ensuring that our beloved sport remains viable for the next generation of riders and owners.

Louise Bielby’s story

Louise Bielby, a Harry Hall One Club member from East Yorkshire, explains the sacrifices she’s made to care for her horse, Rupert.

“Rupert is my world and my family. Looking after him is my number one concern and affording him is my second. I’ve definitely noticed that costs across horse ownership have gone up. Personal things like going to the dentist and other general expenses have been put on hold and I will always cut my own costs and make personal sacrifices first, Rupert will never go without.

“I have peace of mind knowing we have the Gold Plus membership with Harry Hall, this gives me access to affordable insurance so we’re covered should any ‘incidents’ happen. Rupert is the one constant thing in my life that keeps me happy and although the cost of things rising can mean feeling the pinch, he is my priority.”

The Harry Hall Horse Census has uncovered concerning trends in equine insurance coverage across the UK. Our research reveals that more than a third of horse owners (36%) are choosing to forgo insurance altogether, exposing themselves to potentially significant financial risks.

The reasons behind this insurance gap are multifaceted. Over half of uninsured owners (53%) cite the prohibitive cost of premiums as their primary reason for not insuring their horse.
icon_advantage_block
This financial barrier has led to a concerning trend of self-insurance, with 41% of owners opting to either set aside monthly savings or rely on credit cards for emergency veterinary care.
icon_advantage_block
Further complications arise from policy restrictions, with 32% of owners pointing to excessive exclusions as a barrier to insurance, while 29% face challenges insuring older horses.

What these findings mean

These findings highlight a critical need within the equestrian sector for more accessible and flexible insurance solutions that better serve the diverse needs of horse owners.

With veterinary costs continuing to rise, the decision to go without insurance creates significant vulnerability for both horses and their owners, potentially compromising access to essential medical care when it’s needed most.

Liz Hopper,
Managing Director
at Harry Hall, explains

“The results of the inaugural Harry Hall Horse Census reveal what has been felt across the community for some time and show the lengths equestrians are going to amid the cost-of-living crisis that is impacting everyone. Nearly a quarter of horse owners are reducing energy consumption in their homes to prioritise their horses’ care, while 88% have given up holidays altogether. Perhaps most concerning, a third of equestrians are cutting back on their own food to meet horse care expenses.

These statistics aren’t just numbers – they represent real challenges facing our community. The census has made it clear that there are areas across the equestrian sector that require immediate attention and improvement to help ensure that all horses and riders are supported throughout their journeys. At Harry Hall we aim to make horse ownership more affordable by providing products and services that lower that annual cost.

It’s vital that businesses serving equestrian communities in the UK are doing all they can to help alleviate these pressures – a passion that is at the very heart of our organisation. The Harry Hall Horse Census has demonstrated that it is now more important than ever for us to continue to support our customers by introducing innovative, new services and products, as we strive to make horse riding and ownership more affordable and accessible for everyone, so they don’t have to make sacrifices.”
