What’s classed as a veteran horse?
Generally, a horse is considered “veteran”, retired or mature once they pass the age of 15.
This is also the age from which the Veteran Horse Society (VHS) welcomes horses and ponies into its showing series.
Do I legally have to insure my veteran horse?
No, there’s no legal requirement to insure a horse of any age.
That said, it’s worth thinking through what not insuring your horse could mean, particularly around unexpected vet bills or liability if your horse were to cause damage or injury to a third party.
Are there age restrictions on veteran horse insurance?
At Harry Hall One Club, our membership includes Public Liability and Personal Accident insurance with no upper age limit, and you can add-on our accidental, external, visible injury Vet Fees insurance, which also has no upper age limit.
Is everything covered, or are there exclusions to be aware of?
As with any policy, it’s important to check the full policy details.
For example, colic surgery is typically excluded for horses over 15, given the increased risk associated with surgery at that age. Some conditions are also frequently excluded or significantly more expensive to insure, for older horses.
Rather than charging more for this kind of cover, providers like Harry Hall focus on keeping the core protections (like public liability and accidental injury vet fees) cost-effective and without age limits instead.
Why does public liability insurance matter for an older horse?
Even the quietest, most experienced horse can cause injury or damage. If your retired horse or horse at grass gets loose, kicks out at a third party, damages property, or even injures a field companion, the costs of a claim can quickly add up and become significant.
Public Liability cover can protect you, especially financially, if a claim is made against you by a third party, regardless of your horse’s age.
What happens if my horse passes away- is there any cover for that?
Yes, in the event of your horse’s passing due to an accidental external visible injury, mortality, straying and disposal cover can help with the financial side of things at what’s already a difficult time.

How much does veteran horse insurance cost?
Membership with Harry Hall One Club includes Public Liability and Personal Accident insurance starts from £5.75 a month.
Vet Fees insurance for accidental, external, visible injuries can be added from £8.40 a month and you can add up to 4 horses on the same vet fee policy, sharing your cover limit between them at no additional premium.

Can I insure more than one horse?
Yes. For example, as standard with our platinum membership you can cover up to 10 horses for public liability, and up to 4 horses per additional vet fee policy, sharing a claim limit across them, because all horses matter to Harry Hall One Club. No favourites here!
Can I insure a veteran horse on the same policy as a younger one?
Yes! -multiple horses of different ages can typically be covered under the same membership, making it easier to manage insurance across your whole stable rather than juggling separate policies and bills.
Is there a minimum age for cover?
Vet Fees insurance for accidental, external, visible injuries is available for any horse over 30 days old, so cover isn’t just about the older end of the age scale.
Will my veteran horse need a vetting to get insured?
This can vary depending on the specific policy and provider, so it’s always worth checking directly when you get a quote, particularly if your horse has any pre-existing conditions.

Does veteran horse insurance cover donkeys and other equids?
