Trailer insurance from Harry Hall protecting against theft, fire and accidental damage

What is trailer insurance and why might you need it?

Trailer insurance protects your trailer against financial risks like theft, accidental damage and fire.

Here’s the bit people often assume: your trailer is automatically covered by your car insurance.

While you’re towing, most motor policies extend only limited third-party cover. That protects other people’s property if you cause damage, but it doesn’t cover accidental damage, fire or theft to the trailer itself. And once you unhitch and park up, that limited extension usually falls away entirely.

That is exactly what a standalone trailer policy is for.

Horse Trailer Insurance Explained

Do I need to be a Harry Hall One Club member to purchase trailer insurance?

Yes – trailer insurance is arranged through One Club membership, but you only need our Entry-level tier, which is the lowest and quickest to join. It gives you the ability to buy and manage your cover online. You can join in a couple of minutes while you arrange your insurance, and if you’re already a member you can log straight in.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
Is my trailer covered by my car insurance?

Not for damage or theft to the trailer itself. While you’re towing, most car policies extend only limited third-party cover — that helps if you damage someone else’s property, but it won’t pay to repair or replace your own trailer. And once you unhitch and park up, that extension usually stops altogether. A standalone trailer policy is what covers accidental damage, fire and theft to the trailer itself, on the road or at home.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
Do I legally need trailer insurance?

There’s no standalone legal requirement to insure the trailer itself, because a trailer isn’t a motorised vehicle. It’s the towing vehicle that must be taxed, MOT’d and insured, and you’ll need to hold the correct licence category for the combined weight you’re towing. Some heavier and commercial trailers also have to be registered before use, and different rules apply if you’re towing abroad. Because these rules can change and depend on your circumstances, always check the current position at GOV.UK before you tow.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
Is there an excess under the policy?

Yes. An excess of £100 applies to each claim for accidental loss or damage, £150 for malicious damage or theft, and £300 for malicious damage or theft while your trailer is away from your home address. Your policy documents set out the exact excesses that apply to you, so it’s always worth checking them before you claim.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
What's the maximum trailer value you can insure?

You can insure trailers up to £8,000 in value online in minutes. For trailers valued over £8,000 up to £25,000, cover is arranged in partnership with Commercial Express — just give our team a call on 01274 711011 for a quote, as terms may differ from the online policy.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
Will my trailer be covered when parked at home and away?

Yes — cover applies whether your trailer is being towed, parked at home or parked away from home, subject to the policy terms. Some security conditions may apply, particularly for theft away from home, so it’s worth reading your policy documents so you know what’s expected.

Policy terms & conditions, exclusions apply
Can I let someone else borrow my trailer?

In general, cover can apply while your trailer is being used by someone else with your permission, provided the policy terms and conditions are met — but this depends on the wording, so please check your policy documents or call our team on 01274 711011 if you’re unsure.

Do I need to tell you if I change or sell my trailer?

Yes, please let us know. If you change or sell your trailer we’ll need to update or cancel your policy so your cover stays correct. Amendments to a policy are chargeable at a small admin fee of £10 per policy or certificate.

Does the policy cover theft of the trailer?

Yes — theft of the trailer is covered, up to your chosen value limit or the trailer’s current market value, whichever is lower, and subject to the excess and any security conditions in your policy. As always, your policy documents confirm exactly what’s covered and any conditions that apply.

Can I pay monthly?

Monthly payments are available at no extra cost on eligible online policies (confirm eligibility band – e.g. trailers under £8,000). When you get your quote you’ll see the payment options available to you before you buy.
