Flexible Tractor Insurance UK
From working machinery to classic, vintage and hobby tractors, this cover is arranged through ERS, the UK’s largest specialist motor insurer.
Whether you’re running a smallholding, restoring a classic Ferguson, or managing estate grounds, a policy can be shaped to suit your setup.
What is tractor insurance?
Tractor insurance is specialist motor cover for agricultural tractors, from everyday working machines to hobby tractors, with classic tractor insurance options for vintage and restored models. It can protect against accidents, theft, fire and damage, and provides the third-party cover you legally need to drive a tractor on a public road in the UK.
Tractors support a wide range of essential jobs, from working farms and private estates to hobby smallholdings and show circuits.
That’s why we’ve partnered with ERS to offer comprehensive tractor insurance that brings everything together under one flexible, tailored policy. You can choose the cover that suits your setup, from a single classic or vintage model to a mixed-use working fleet, with options designed to reflect how you actually use your vehicles. For example, you can select a multi-vehicle option to cover your tractor, tools, trailer and defender.
Do you need tractor insurance in the UK?
In the UK, tractor insurance is a legal requirement only if you drive your tractor on a public road or in a public place. In that case you must hold at least third-party cover under the Road Traffic Act 1988. If your tractor is used strictly on private land, insurance is not legally required, but it is still strongly recommended.
- Driving on a public highway, including short trips along a road between fields or sites, requires a minimum of third-party insurance.
- Driving uninsured can lead to a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points. If the case goes to court, you could face an unlimited fine and a driving ban, and police can seize the vehicle.
- You must also be insured for the way you use the tractor, for example agricultural work, hire, or travelling to shows and rallies.
- Insurance is not legally required if your tractor stays strictly on private land and never goes on a public road.
- Off-road cover is still strongly recommended to protect against theft, fire, vandalism and accidental damage.
- Public liability cover is worth considering if visitors, workers or contractors are on your property.
- If your tractor is registered with the DVLA but kept off the road, it must either be insured or declared off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).
The same rules apply to classic and vintage tractors. If you drive a restored tractor to a show, rally or road run, you need at least third-party cover for that journey. Classic tractor insurance can also reflect the agreed value of a restored model, so it is protected whether it is on the road, at an event or stored at home.

Common Issues
Comprehensive cover that can include road use and land-based work under one policy.
Running a specialist vehicle comes with its own challenges. Damage at a show, theft, accident on the road or cover that doesn’t stretch to off-road use — these things can cause delays and unexpected costs.
- Standard motor policies often don’t cover tractors used for shows, rallies, or off-road work across different sites.
- Classic, vintage and restored tractors have values that may not be reflected in standard agricultural vehicle pricing.
- Tractors stored in open areas or moved between sites can be left exposed without the right policy in place.
- Comprehensive cover that can include road use, show attendance, and land-based work under one policy.
- Value options that can reflect the condition and history of a classic, restored or vintage tractor.
- Customisable options that can reflect how often each vehicle is actually used.
- Protection for vehicles stored in open areas, including theft and damage cover.

Frequently asked questions about tractor insurance
The cost of tractor insurance depends on a number of factors, including the make, model and value of your vehicle, how and where it is used, where it is stored, the level of cover you need and driver history. Call us on 01274 711011 for a quote tailored to your setup.
Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, third-party motor insurance is a legal requirement for any vehicle used on a road or other public place. If your tractor is used solely on private land and never on a public road, you are not legally required to hold motor insurance. However, cover may still be worth considering to protect against theft, fire, or accidental damage. If you are unsure whether your use requires insurance, it is worth speaking to us or seeking independent legal advice.
Yes, this insurance can cover classic, vintage and restored tractors. When arranging a policy, the value of your vehicle will be discussed so that cover can reflect its condition — rather than just a standard book value. Call us on 01274 711011 to talk through the options available.
This insurance can cover multiple vehicles under one arrangement. If you have other agricultural vehicles currently insured elsewhere, it is worth discussing with us whether they could be brought together. As ERS policies are designed to cover a range of vehicle types, it may be more cost-effective to arrange cover for all your vehicles. Call us on 01274 711011 and we can talk through your options. You may also want to take a look at our agricultural vehicle insurance page if you run a wider range of vehicles.
Who is covered to drive your tractor will depend on the terms of your individual policy and what is shown on your certificate of motor insurance. Any person you wish to add as a named driver should be discussed when arranging cover. Call us on 01274 711011 for more information.
This policy includes cover for agricultural trailers — those used for agricultural or forestry purposes — whether attached to or detached from your vehicle if they are declared on your policy. This does not automatically extend to all attachments or implements, and exclusions apply (for example, to property being carried in the trailer). Please refer to the policy wording for full details, or call us on 01274 711011 to discuss your specific setup. You may also wish to look at our trailer insurance page.
To arrange a quote, it helps to have the following to hand: the make, model, and year of your tractor; an estimate of its current value; how it is used and where; where it is stored overnight; and details of any drivers you wish to include. Call us on 01274 711011 and we will guide you through the rest.
